The Pelican
Pelican Counseling Services was founded by Isadora Girardi in 2023. Here is what she has to say about the reason behind the name of this practice.
Growing up in a country with a poor economy and due to having divorced parents, it wasn’t until a couple of years after moving to the US that I was able to have a place that I called home. Growing up in Brazil, I spent most of my time at my grandparents, where I shared a bedroom and was not able to have my own space.
At the age of 12, I immigrated from Brazil to the United States, where through hard work and perseverance, my single-mother was able to provide a home for my older brother and me. That very first home, was located on Pelican Court. This house was the first one that I considered to be my own home, and many “firsts” happened there. This was where I learned to speak English, this was where I went through high school, learned how to drive, applied to college, made new friends, played new sports, etc.
This was also a very transformative home for me, where I went through emotional pain, missing my family and friends from home, adjusting to a new culture and community, and many other events. I believe that through that time of my life, I developed many parts of my personality and belief system, and it was the start of shaping who I am today.

The Pelican – Symbolism
It is believed that the Pelican has many different purposes in serving its community. Some believe that the pouch on the pelican represents the wealth of nutrition in our bodies, mind, and soul. As a counselor, I believe that a holistic approach is ideal for developing the best version of ourselves.
The Pelican is also known to be an active team player. “It will not allow you to sit on life’s sideline, unmotivated. You need to get out there, among like-minded people and build new friendships. Accept support; give support.” (Building Beautiful Souls, Inc.)
It is also thought that the Pelican will always remain calm, even when in the middle of chaos. This calmness can lead you to the help that you need.

The Pelican – Christianity
In the Bible, the Pelican has shown great sacrifice for those that it cares about, such as during a great famine. The Pelican is not afraid to cut into its own flesh to feed its blood and provide nutrition to those in need.
This symbolizes the sacrifices of Christ for mankind, therefore the church believes the Pelican is a symbol of devotion, grace, self-sacrifice, harmony, peaceful communities, nurturance, and safety.
